I Am A Bunny

By Ole Risom and Richard Scarry
Golden Books

This book is about Nicholas the bunny who does fun things in the summer, fall, spring and winter. It’s a great introduction to the seasons, and the illustrations are beautiful and interesting.

In the summer Nicholas the bunny lies in the sun to watch birds, and in the spring he keeps dry under a toadstool. As I was reading, I realized that I would always identify a mushroom as a mushroom since that is the most common usage. But that’s the wonderful thing about children’s literature: it introduces them to synonyms like toadstool, undoubtedly a less common word, but that’s the point, right?  We want our children to increase their lexicons and to learn not just common every-day language, but academic words as well.

This book kept my son engaged, and we would spend a lot of additional time discussing the pictures.
